Unobserved Heterogeneity and Efficiency Measurement in Public Transport
نویسندگان
چکیده
Efficiency measurement in public transport requires an adequate account of unobserved network characteristics that are typically modeled as factors separable from the production process. This paper proposes a panel data model that allows for nonseparable firm-specific heterogeneity in an input distance function. The proposed model is applied to a sample of German and Swiss urban transit companies operating from 1991 to 2006. The results underline the presence of non-separable unobserved factors and their effects on technological characteristics such as returns to scale. Moreover, the data suggest that the effect of time-invariant heterogeneity could be significantly greater than technical inefficiency. Date of final version: 27 July 2010

Some Determinants of Cost Efficiency in German Public Transport
This paper evaluates cost efficiency and some of its managerial determinants in Germany’s local public transport. A heteroscedastic Stochastic Frontier approach reveals that a high degree of tramcar utilisation and a high outsourcing degree influence the efficiency predictions positively. Mean efficiencies lie between 0.849 and 0.952, depending on the applied panel data models accounting for un...
متن کاملPublic Transport Ontology for Passenger Information Retrieval
Passenger information aims at improving the user-friendliness of public transport systems while influencing passenger route choices to satisfy transit user’s travel requirements. The integration of transit information from multiple agencies is a major challenge in implementation of multi-modal passenger information systems. The problem of information sharing is further compounded by the multi-l...
متن کاملImproving envelopment in data envelopment analysis by means of unobserved DMUs: an application of banking industry
In data envelopment analysis, the relative efficiency of a decision making unit (DMU) is defined as the ratio of the sum of its weighted outputs to the sum of its weighted inputs allowing the DMUs to freely allocate weights to their inputs/outputs. However, this measure may not reflect a the true efficiency of a DMU because some of its inputs/outputs may not contribute reasonably in computing t...
متن کاملEconomies of Scale and Efficiency Measurement in Switzerland’s Nursing Homes
This paper examines the cost efficiency in the nursing home industry, an issue of concern to Swiss policy makers because of the explosive growth of national expenditure on elderly care and the aging of the population. A stochastic cost frontier model with a translog function has been applied to a balanced panel data of 1780 observations from 356 nursing homes operating over five years (1998-200...
متن کاملThe Measurement and Comparison of Technical Efficiency Between Public and private Textile Industry in Iran
This paper is concerned with the estimation of frontier production function to measure the technical efficiency for Iranian textile companies during 1995. The objective of this estimation is to investigate if there are any differences in the technical efficiency between the private and public firms as well as the relationship between technical efficiency and size of textile companies in Iran. A...
